Product History

UnwellFargo XP was developed under the internal codename Murmur beginning in late 1999, following the discontinuation of the Neptune and Odyssey project lines. It was intended to unify the consumer and business product lines under a single architecture for the first time.

The "XP" designation in the product name was chosen to represent Extended Presence, a term used internally to describe the product's intended relationship to the user's daily environment. Earlier documentation from the Murmur development cycle used the phrase "eXtended Permanence," though this was revised prior to public announcement. Some users continue to report that the initials stood for something else entirely. This is not accurate.

UnwellFargo XP shipped in two primary editions at launch: Home Edition and Professional. A third edition, referred to in pre-release materials as the Embedded Special Edition, was prepared but not released to the general public. References to this edition appear occasionally in third-party documentation. Its contents are not known.

Service Pack History

Three service packs were issued during the supported lifecycle of UnwellFargo XP. Service Pack 2, released August 25, 2004, introduced significant changes to the system's security model. Service Pack 3, released April 21, 2008, incorporated the majority of updates issued since Service Pack 2 and is the final update to this product.

Note: A fourth service pack was announced in 2011. It was not released. Its development status is not known. Inquiries to the relevant support channels have not received responses.

Predecessor and Successor

UnwellFargo XP succeeded UnwellFargo Millennium Edition (2000) in the consumer line and UnwellFargo 2000 in the professional line. It was succeeded by UnwellFargo Vista (2007), though a significant portion of the user base did not migrate at that time or at any subsequent time.

Users who remain on UnwellFargo XP do so for a variety of reasons. This documentation does not attempt to evaluate those reasons.

End of Support Notice

This product has reached end of extended support. No further security updates, patches, or technical assistance will be provided. The system will continue to function.

What End of Support Means

As of March 31, 2014, UnwellFargo XP entered the post-support phase of its lifecycle. During this phase, the following changes are in effect:

  • No new security updates will be issued for this product.
  • No new non-security hotfixes will be issued for this product.
  • No assisted support options are available for this product.
  • Online technical content will no longer be updated for this product.
  • The system will continue to function.

Users are advised that continued use of an unsupported operating system may expose their systems to security risks. Users are advised of this regularly. The proportion of users who have taken action in response to this advisement is not available in this documentation.

Migration Guidance

Users wishing to migrate from UnwellFargo XP are encouraged to consider more recent products in the UnwellFargo line. At the time of this writing, supported versions include UnwellFargo 10 and UnwellFargo 11.

Users who have chosen not to migrate are understood to have made this choice deliberately. This documentation does not attempt to revisit that choice.

Extended Hotfix Agreement

Organizations with active Extended Hotfix Agreements may have been eligible to receive additional updates through July 2015. The Extended Hotfix Agreement program has since closed. If you believe you have an active agreement, please contact support.

The servers that processed Extended Hotfix Agreement inquiries were decommissioned on September 12, 2015. Attempts to reach them will not succeed. This is expected.

A Note on Continued Use

UnwellFargo XP remains in use on a number of systems worldwide. The precise number of such systems is not known. Estimates have varied significantly, and the methodology underlying these estimates has not always been made available for review.

The experience of using an unsupported system is not unlike other experiences of using things past the point at which they were meant to be used. This documentation does not assign a value judgment to that experience.

Known Issues and Limitations

The following issues have been identified in UnwellFargo XP. This list reflects issues documented as of Service Pack 3. Issues identified after the end of extended support are not tracked in this document.

Workarounds marked by design indicate that the described behavior is intentional and will not be changed in a future update, as no future updates will be issued.
KB890830
Desktop icons may appear in positions that do not correspond to their last saved arrangement
In certain configurations, desktop icons may revert to a previous positional state after a system restart, or may appear in positions the user does not remember placing them. The arrangement displayed may correspond to an earlier session, or to no session the user can identify.
Workaround: Rearrange the icons. They will hold their positions until the next occurrence.
KB821557
System clock may display incorrect local time in certain time zones
The system clock in the taskbar notification area may, in certain conditions, display a time that does not correspond to the user's configured local time zone. The displayed time is internally consistent and advances at the correct rate. It is simply offset.
Workaround: By design. Double-clicking the clock will display the correct time.
KB923980
Users report a persistent indication that a window is open that cannot be located on the desktop
A subset of users has reported experiencing a persistent sense that an application window is open somewhere on the desktop, behind other windows or otherwise obscured, that cannot be located through normal navigation. Investigation has not reproduced this issue in a controlled environment. The taskbar does not always reflect the presence of this window. Its contents are not known.
Workaround: Minimize all windows using the Show Desktop button. If the window is still not visible, restart the Explorer shell. If the sensation persists after restart, this is outside the scope of this article.
KB884020
Start menu "recently used programs" list may include programs the user does not remember using
The Start menu's recently used programs list is populated based on frequency of use as tracked by the shell. In some cases, this list may include applications the user does not recall launching. The tracking data reflects actual system events. The discrepancy between the tracking data and the user's recollection is not a defect in the tracking system.
Workaround: Right-click the Start menu and select Properties to clear the recently used programs list.
KB956572
The Recycle Bin may display a full state when empty, or an empty state when full
In rare cases, the Recycle Bin desktop icon may not accurately reflect the contents of the Recycle Bin. The contents of the Recycle Bin are not affected by this display issue. Items believed to have been deleted may still be recoverable. Items believed to be present may have already been removed.
Workaround: Open the Recycle Bin to verify its contents directly.
KB903235
CRT display filter may persist after being disabled
Following the deactivation of the CRT display overlay, some users report that the visual quality of the display does not fully return to its pre-filter state. Colors may appear slightly different. Edges may appear slightly softer. Users who have used the CRT filter for extended periods may find the unfiltered display difficult to characterize as an improvement.
Workaround: By design.
